TGI Parties: The Gift Insider Turns 30!

I celebrated the big 3-0 on Saturday October 15th this year (I lucked out with the Saturday, right?!) I wanted to do something a little different than your typical dinner party, so we decided to throw a loft party for 50 of our friends in downtown Detroit. We were going for a chic yet casual cocktail party vibe so we rented a raw industrial space and had apps, desert, plenty of cocktails and music. Thanks to the amazing crew who came out, and my hubby for making it all happen.

Below are some photos and links to where we found all the party goods!

img_2073

The event space we found was Orleans + Winder in Eastern Market. We loved working with them and highly recommend if you are looking for a raw space downtown. It was chic from the start, so no matter how we decorated the space had exactly the vibe we were going for.

img_2070

We found the tassel balloons at ConfettiHaus on Etsy. The raw wood tables and gold mirror we rented from the event space and the striped table clothes we had from a past shindig.

img_2069

I know, I know the mylar number balloons are getting a little overdone…but I couldn’t help myself. I added little tassels on the bottom to make them extra special.

img_2079

The gold glitter Sweets, Drinks and Eats signs we reused from our engagement party a few years ago. Turns out it’s a great investment to have if you throw lots of parties! We’re big fans of the “naked cake” trend and loved trying one out for the first time.

img_2163

The man who kept the drinks going all night long, Glen! Highly recommend splurging on help if hosting your own party so you can relax and have fun with your guests. Spotted! One of our favorite wedding gifts, our Lindsay + Jon champagne bucket. We have used this countless times.

img_2159

We found the perfect gold plastic silverware on amazon (obsessed!) and art decor plates from Target. We served mediterranean style apps and a Brushetta bar and the most-loved last-minute decision by hubby, boxes on boxes of Supinos pizza.

img_2072

The 30 Pinata we got from ThePerfectPinata on Etsy and used for decor and as a Photobooth prop later in the night.

img_2195

A party ain’t a party without the perfect photo backdrop! We have been obsessed with these grown up Pinatas from Chiciata and finally had the perfect party to use them for. We used the raw wall and framed a perfect photo-opp spot right when guests walked in.

img_2068

Here’s a shot of the photo backdrop, we also had a few triangle garlands to fill it out.

img_2320

We had photo props and a refurbished Poloroid Camera with polaroids for guests to take and take home.

I couldn’t have imagined a better way to celebrate this milestone! We’d love to hear some of the creative ways you guys have celebrated your milestone birthdays in the comments below!

How to Host a Boho Themed Picnic Party

It was my turn to host our monthly dinner club last month. Each month the host chooses the theme, so I decided to go with a Boho Picnic theme. I wanted to make it really laid-back with a cozy vibe. I told the girls to wear something casual and comfy and we all sat outside on a low table piled with pillows and blankets under our string lights. Each girl brought an easy picnic food (pasta salad, skewers, roll ups). Below are some photos and things you’ll need if you want to host your own boho picnic.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

1. Low Picnic Table: We found these low portable picnic table’s at Crate and Barrel and put three together to make enough room. We added a runner from West Elm and some lanterns from Target with citronella candles.

2. Plastic Tableware: We received these Melamine Michael Aram Orchid plates as a wedding present, and have used them everytime we entertain outside.

3. Rugs + Pillows: To make the it all work you need to make sure it’s comfortable for everyone to sit without chairs. We love the look of piling lots of different textures and patterned rugs and pillows to really give off that boho vibe. We used things we had around the house, a round beach towel, a picnic blanket, etc.

4. String Lights: Lights are a must for the boho picnic vibe. Check out our Housewarming Party post to see how we did those.

5. Drinks + Plastic Glassware: This line of plastic glassware we found on our Honeymoon in Capri, Italy but you can order on Amazon! We did lots of Rose and Pelligrino, but Sangria would a fun way to go for this theme too.

6. Cheese Boards: For our dinner club each girl brings one dish for everyone to share. For mine, I decided to go for my first attempt at an #instaworthy cheese board. The key is to pile the big pieces on first and then fill in with the smaller fruit, nuts and crackers. And of course, a pretty cheese board never hurts.

It was such a lovely night, we can’t wait to do it again next summer.

17 Ways We Added Personal Touches to Our Wedding

Our wedding weekend was everything we ever dreamed of. It was an absolute fairy tale, dream come true, still can’t-believe-it-really-all-happened evening and I have felt like I could explode with happiness since the moment I walked down the aisle. I can’t wait to finally share some of the memories with all of you.  We’ll be posting wedding themed posts with advice, things we’ve learned and tons of photos from our special day throughout the next few months, so make sure to keep checking back.

IMG_7939

Our first post is full of what many of our guests told us they loved most about our wedding, the personal and personalized details that made our wedding “us”.

1. Hand Written Calligraphy Signs

White_Gold_CalligraphySign_HappilyEverAfter

We found these frames at a local flea market, spray painted them shiny gold and hired a calligraphy artist from RockPaperScissors to design.  Our florist created floral garlands to frame each sign.

2. Indoor Garden Ceremony

IndoorGardenWedding_GreakOaksLandscape

This ceremony backdrop was created and dreamt up by my talented father of Great Oaks Landscape Associates.  The entire ceremony felt like all of us were in the middle of a secret garden.  It was magical.

3. “Pick Your Own” Blush Bridesmaid Dresses

MixandMatchBlushBridesmaidsDress

I wanted each of my bridesmaids to love their dress and be able to express a little of their own personality, so each girl picked their own long blush dress, all different styles and fabrics.  To tie it all together our florist used matching long blush ribbon in all of the bouquets.

4. Gold Foil Coasters & Cocktail Napkins

DontTakeMyDrinkCoasters_TheGiftInsiderWedding

We had custom L&J and #ScheyYes gold foil cocktail napkins at the bars and were passed out with our signature drink. The coasters are from Etsy and are meant to be put on top of your drink. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Roberts family event without a top notch selection of single malt scotch.

5. K.S.S. Signature Drink

SignatureDrink_Sign_TheGiftInsiderWedding

Jon and I always both order Ketel & Soda’s – I like lemon, he likes his with lime. Instead of dreaming up some fancy schmancy signature drink, we offered a “K.S.S.” – Ketel + Soda + a Swizzle Stick (the gold pom pom.)  I designed the gold foil sign on photoshop.

6. You Look Gorgeous Ladies Room Mirror

YouLookGorgeousMirror_TheGiftInsiderWedding

This was a huge hit and a total last-minute idea by the creative genius and adorable mother of mine, Mindy (seen in the photo.) We used a flea market mirror and wrote in pink lipstick a note to all the ladies to remind them how gorgeous they looked.

7. Gold Foil Menu with a Little Personality

GoldFoilMenu_Minted_TheGiftInsider

We kept our menu humorous, blush, foil stamped and as unstuffy as possible.  The hit! Our “Midnight Snack – Leo’s Chicken Finger Pitas, with Ranch, of Course.”  If you don’t know Leo’s you must not be from Metro Detroit. We designed the Menus and our programs on Minted. We’ll do a separate post on our paper goods soon!

9. Gold Calligraphy Table Numbers

CalligraphyTableNumbers_TheGiftInsiderWedding

We tried to keep the gold calligraphy theme going and keep things simple on the tables.  The numbers were written in script from Etsy company, BetterOffWed.

10. Blush Lighting + Gold Centerpieces

TheGiftInsiderWedding_BruceBreathofSpring

Our florist, Breath of Spring, created these beautiful centerpieces with hydrangeas, roses and hanging greenery to continue with the indoor elegant garden vibe.  We had gold stands and the most romantic shade of blush lighting.

11. White Dance Floor with Gold Decal

MonogrammedWhiteDanceFloor_TheGiftInsiderWedding - 100

I had my heart set on a huge white dance floor from the moment I started planning.  While one of our splurges, the WOW factor when you walked into the perfectly lit room made the atmosphere unforgettable. The stage was lined with white Hydrangea bushes.

12. Mr and Mrs Chair Signs

MrandMrsCalligraphy_ChairSigns

These Mr and Mrs Gold Calligraphy Chair signs were from the same Etsy site as our chair signs and cake topper, BetterOffWed.

13. 7 Layer Cake Wedding Cake

7LayerCakeWeddingCake

This was one of those ideas everyone told us was crazy, but ended up being a huge hit.  Instead of the traditional wedding cake, we did a 3 tiered 7 Layer Cake (a traditional Jewish dessert and my hubby’s favorite!) It was DEVOURED.  Our florist added some blush flowers and we topped it with a Mr and Mrs Schey Calligraphy cake topper from BetterOffWed.

14. LED Light Sticks + Red Heart Sunglasses

WeddingLEDLightSticksWeddingGlasses_Hearts

When the dance floor was packed we passed out Red Heart Sunglasses and LED I Heart L+J foam sticks. The sticks were inspired from a night out in Miami on my bachelorette.

15. Glamorous + Fun Open Photo Booth

PhotoBoothPropsLindsayRobertsJonSchey_Wedding

There is nothing more fun than a photo booth filled with props at any party.  For props, we spray painted this gold frame from Ikea, had tons of glittered lips, mustaches and signs and had huge paper flowers from Michaels.

16. Dani Jar Layered Dessert Favors

LaurieTennentDetails_Small - 165

JarsbyDani

Each Dani Jar has different layers of delicious desserts and we personalized the lid with our gold initials and a “A Sweet Ending to a New Beginning.” I designed the sign and got the frame at the flea market.

17. Happily Ever After Welcome Totes

TheGiftInsider_WeddingTotes

We went a little crazy w/ our Welcome Totes, these were designed by Etsy artist ParisChicBoutique.  We’ll save the details for a later post!

We hope this inspires you to find some unique ways to personalize your wedding! Next we’ll be writing how to make an amazing welcome tote, gifts we gave our wedding party, invites/stationery, decor, bridesmaids dresses, etc  – lots of fun wedding ideas ahead!

CAN’T WAIT! HUGE NEWS!  ALERT! SAVE THE DATE!  APPLY!

On November 22nd & 23rd, we are hosting a holiday pop up shop with Somerset Collection’s CityLoft in Downtown Detroit.  Myself along with Rachel from Styleshack.com get the lucky job of handpicking select local gift and apparel vendors to add to the Somerset mix.

This 2-day Pop Up will be nothing like your typical holiday market, but a highly curated shopping “experience.”  Think mini manis, charm bars, mixologists, DJ’s, and a vendor mix of Uptown (Somerset’s super schmancy national retail stores) meets Downtown (our handpicked local boutiques and independent companies.)

We are scoping out the scene for the best local retailers and companies to add to the mix. If you are interested or know of a company or shop that might be a good fit, email me at Lindsay@thegiftinsider.com

Everyone else, keep your eyes out, we’ll be updating a ton about the event, and SAVE THE DATE!

TGI Review: Fete Holiday Night Pop-Up Market!

Fete Chicago

We were super excited to check out the new Chicago Market, Fete, last Thursday. It was put on by 3 former Dose curators in the lofty and very cool space,  Room 1520.  We respect the hell out of a highly curated mix of vendors and products, it’s tough to do (as evident by amount 97% of holiday markets out there) but Fete did it flawlessly.  It was a great mix of food + gifts, minimal but chic decor and a very hip and  in-the-know crowd.

Our favorites 5 favorite vendors:

    1. PoshCorn
    2. Nourishing Notes
    3. DinnerPartyShop
    4. Veruca Chocolates
    5. Brewcamp

Can’t wait until the next one! Nice job on a fabulous event ladies.

CND Shellac Nail Spa Sanctuary Event: Tres Chic

20120716-104918.jpg

So Marisa and I were lucky enough to attend this really cool event last week hosted by CND Shellac. Really couldn’t have been a chicer event.  Started off in the Penthouse of the Chicago’s oh-so-fab Waldorf Astoria.  Each guest received a complimentary shellac manicure with fun foil options, sparkles and even the oh-so-amazing Astrowifey nail artist to add any additional flair.  I got a really fun native themed design on three of my coral nails. It’s actually my first time doing any fun nail art, still love looking at my nails.

I’ve been a big fan of the no-chip manicure for the past year-or-so, I’m pretty rough on my nails so I really just love that I don’t have to deal with them for a couple weeks and they look perfect, AND that I don’t have to wait for them to dry after they are finished.

The event finished off with quite the lovely surprise, a gorgeous and talented opera singer and well-known violinist giving us our own private  concert. TRES CHIC!

Have you guys gotten any cool nail art lately? What’s your favorite designs? Tell us!
