DIY Ideas: Add Some DIY Flaire To Your Travel Gear

I really couldn’t live without my Reisenthal Travel Tote, it folds up in a suitcase as a the perfect backup for shopping excursions or in our case gift shlepping trips. We wanted to try to glitz things up a bit and inspired by the applique sweatshirts of a recent #instafav, Bow and Drape, we decided to DIY our travel tote with some sequin letter appliques.

All you need are some Glitter Sequin Appliques & some Fabric Adhesic.

DIY Gift Idea // Chalkboard Lunchbox

Have a little one going back to school? Make sure your kids know just how special they are every single day of the year by making them an easy DIY Chalkboard Lunchbox.

Back to School Lunchbox

Step 1:  Purchase a cute tin lunchbox (we love these Fender finds from amazon)

Step 2: Get Chalkboard Paint and Sponge Brushes

Chalkboard DIY Gift

Step 3: Cover the edges of the tin box with painters tape and begin to paint the top section with the chalkboard tape. 2 coasts works best. Let dry in between coats and then overnight.

Step 4: Write a sweet note each morning to your little one, change it depending on the day!

Step 5: Start adding in some healthy elements.  Suprise them with a hidden  banana note.  Use a tack to write the note in the skin and by the time it’s lunchtime it will “magically” appear

DIY Gift Idea // Personalized Canvas Totes for Mother’s Day, Bridesmaids, Your BFFS

This Mother’s Day we decided to go the DIY route and make personalized tote bags for our Mom, Grandmas and future Mother-in-law.  It was a pretty easy process so we thought we’d give you a step-by-step for any group personalized gifting needs you want something cheap, personalized and thoughtful.

Supplies:

– Transfer Paper (Michaels, Amazon, any craft store),
– Canvas Totes (any craft store)
– Design or Download a unique design and font
– Iron
– Towel
– Goodies to Fill Tote

Step #1:

Create a design and look for your totes.  We liked the simplicity of the name and vintage inspired floral border, but there are a lot of ideas on Creative Market if you aren’t graphically design inclinded.

DIY Custom Canvas Tote Bags Mothers Day

Step #2:

Print your design on transfer paper, cut out the design (making sure to cut as close around the design as possible)

DIY Personalized Canvas Tote Bags

Step #3:

Place towel underneath tote to not ruin you table or carpet, remove backing, and lightly press each area of the print for 20 seconds.  Make sure to lift up and press verse moving iron like you would clothing.

DIY Personalized Canvas Tote Bags

Step #4:

Let cool and peel off the backing. If it isn’t coming off easily, iron a little longer.

DIY Personalized Canvas Tote Bags

Step #5:

If you want to do both the front and back of the tote be very careful not to iron where you ironed on the front, as it will melt the front design.  We did a little “Happy Mother’s Day 2014” on the bottom back. (Doing both sides was definitly the hardest part of the process for us, so be carefull!)

DIY Personalized Canvas Tote Bags

Step #6:

Repeat for as many totes as you need.  We got a few extra canvas bags just in case any didn’t turn out.  We ended up using both of our extras, we recommend doing the same.

DIY Personalized Canvas Tote Bags

Step #7:

Fill totes with fresh flowers, edible treats or any goodies each person might like.  We gave each of our giftees slightly different gifts on the inside so the gift seemed a little more personalized to each person. Tie with a pretty ribbon and use colorful tissue paper.

DIY Personalized Canvas Tote Bags

Step #8:

Let them ooh-and-ahh over their unique and personalized totes!

DIY Ideas // Super Easy DIY Sharpie Mugs

I decided to test out all of the DIY Sharpie Mugs I’ve been seeing on Pinterest lately for one of our lovely Gift Insider colleagues.  I’m always a little hesitant to try out handwritten crafts, because I’ve never been very fond of my penmenship and was worried it might turn out like a middle school art project…

But, with a little out of the box thinking I figured out a way… I used stickers as stencils to make amost perfect letters.

How to Make a DIY Sharpie Mug (w/ stickers)

1. Place the letter stickers on clean mug and trace around with a sharpie (I used silver since i loved the look with the Spring Starbucks cups)

2. Place mug in the oven (do not pre-heart) and heat up to 350 for 30 minutes

3. Take out of oven, let cool, take off stickers and you’ll have perfect letters and a totally customized mug
