This Mother’s Day we decided to go the DIY route and make personalized tote bags for our Mom, Grandmas and future Mother-in-law. It was a pretty easy process so we thought we’d give you a step-by-step for any group personalized gifting needs you want something cheap, personalized and thoughtful.
– Transfer Paper (Michaels, Amazon, any craft store),
– Canvas Totes (any craft store)
– Design or Download a unique design and font
– Goodies to Fill Tote
Create a design and look for your totes. We liked the simplicity of the name and vintage inspired floral border, but there are a lot of ideas on Creative Market if you aren’t graphically design inclinded.
Print your design on transfer paper, cut out the design (making sure to cut as close around the design as possible)
Place towel underneath tote to not ruin you table or carpet, remove backing, and lightly press each area of the print for 20 seconds. Make sure to lift up and press verse moving iron like you would clothing.
Let cool and peel off the backing. If it isn’t coming off easily, iron a little longer.
If you want to do both the front and back of the tote be very careful not to iron where you ironed on the front, as it will melt the front design. We did a little “Happy Mother’s Day 2014” on the bottom back. (Doing both sides was definitly the hardest part of the process for us, so be carefull!)
Repeat for as many totes as you need. We got a few extra canvas bags just in case any didn’t turn out. We ended up using both of our extras, we recommend doing the same.
Fill totes with fresh flowers, edible treats or any goodies each person might like. We gave each of our giftees slightly different gifts on the inside so the gift seemed a little more personalized to each person. Tie with a pretty ribbon and use colorful tissue paper.
Let them ooh-and-ahh over their unique and personalized totes!
Want a creative way to show someone all of the reasons you love them?
Write your top ten reasons and tie them to a helium balloons for a wonderfully romantic suprise. We printed each reason on sticker paper and stuck to different styled scrapbooking paper, but it’s just as sweet (and easier!) to handwrite each reason as well.
DIY gifts are a really thoughtful and meaningful way to go for a creative Mother’s Day gift. A lot of DIY ideas really aren’t as difficult as they look. We tried our first stab at silhouette art and it was pretty simple!
If you don’t have any photoshop skills, try just printing out a profile shot of the family or pet on sticky paper. Print a few and a few sizes so you have some back-up. Then cut out carefully and stick to any paintable surface, pick a bright “pop-able” acrylic paint color, paint away and when dry just peel off the sticker and you are left with a lovely profile of your loved one! We used canvas and cork for coasters.
If you have a little bit of photoshoping skills, you can try a more original look by printing a black silhoutte, cutting out and framing with some pretty wrapping paper as the background.
Make mom a shadow box cork board to put all of her jewelry right on the wall. Personalize the cork board with with her initials or make it unique with vintage doorknobs! Extra points if you also give her some jewelry to add to her collection.
